Canopy, Canopies, and Outdoor

CanopyA canopy can be your best friend on a hot, sunny day. While simple in design, they are useful for many, many different occasions, including a lazy day of rest and relaxation. They are the ideal way to enjoy the outdoors without having to be in direct sunlight all day long. They can also provide protection from inclement weather as well.

A basic canopy is a simple structure. Its primary function is to provide protection from the elements, and as such a canopy can be as modest as a plastic tarp strung between a few trees. There are however, many types of canopies that are manufactured by many different companies. While many of these companies claim that their products are designed for specific purposes, the truth is that any one canopy can be used for nearly any reason.

When most people think of a canopy they generally think of the canopy tent. These items usually consist of a basic framework of some kind (commonly made from a lightweight material such as aluminum) with a fabric stretched over the top. Canopy fabric can vary, but in most cases it is either a mesh material or an acrylic canvas. However, cotton sheets and plastic tarps are commonly used as well. When it comes to a canopy, shade is the important factor; and as such any material that blocks sunlight can be used for the top.

A portable canopy, sometimes referred to as a “pop up canopy”, is a common outdoor equipment item to take for camping gear and for a day at the beach. These items are easily folded up and stored, and since they are designed to be lightweight, they are easy to carry. They make an ideal place to set up a cooking area while outdoors and can be used as refuge from the sun on a hot afternoon.

Outdoor canopies come in many different sizes and designs. A gazebo canopy (or garden canopy as they are sometimes called) is constructed as a full enclosure, meaning it generally include walls. However, the walls are often made from mesh to allow for air to flow through. A patio canopy is often nothing more than a large awning. However, the highest quality versions are usually retractable, either manually or through the use of an electric motor.

Canopy beds are also popular. While bedding canopies don’t generally serve any practical purpose anymore, as malaria and other such diseases aren’t very common anymore in this country, they do still offer a unique ambience to a bedroom. On these beds, canopy netting is hung from a frame suspended above and allowed to cascade down around the outside of the mattress.

A truck canopy is a bit of a misnomer. These items are not designed to provide shade or protection, at least not for humans. Commonly called bed toppers, these are fiberglass enclosures that are designed to attach to the top of a pick-up truck bed. They are meant to keep the contents of the bed safe and secure.
