Canopy bed
The canopy bed has been a popular piece of bedroom furniture
for centuries. In general terms, these beds are constructed with four
tall posts at each corner. At the top of these posts there is a frame
of some sort that connects all four posts and from which the fabric
for the canopy is hung.
A canopy bed is often considered a staple of romance due to the extra
bit of privacy that the canopy provides. It’s like having an extra
layer of protection between you and the outside world and helps to create
a more intimate setting. While any fabric can be used for the canopy,
lightweight, airy feeling fabrics are the most popular.
It is generally believed that the history of the canopy bed dates back
to the middle ages in Europe. For the commoner, the canopy served as
an extra layer of protection from the cold air during the winter. For
the nobleman, the canopy served as a barrier between him/herself and
the servants that shared the room.
